I am writing to you from SlideRocket (again!), where I found your post today from a Google Alert I have set up about our company. It is a great way to learn about people who are using our product - hopefully (and mostly, as it turns out) happily, as well as those who may be frustrated. We've found out about some great ideas and suggestions, and been able to connect much more personally with old and new customers this way.

So, I just wanted to drop by again and say thanks for using SlideRocket. I'm glad we fell into the category of things you have been excited about. I also used to teach English myself, and I wish I had had a tool like this to use in my classroom! It would have been amazing.

Please let us know any feedback you may have, which you can do on our UserVoice forum: http://sliderocket.uservoice.com (or you can email me They can use the rubric as a checklist as they prepare their work.

After they finish their papers, they have to insert a copy of the rubric at the bottom of the paper. I might save a minute or two per paper, which isn't much unless I've got five sections of 20 students...then those minutes add up.

I gave up using the Word "Comments" as students never read them. I put comments in brackets in blue type in the text instead -- much harder for students to ignore the comments as they scroll to the bottom of the file to see their grade.

Linda
http://www.you-can-teach-writing.com

Scott, Absolutely applaud your efforts to give stu...

Scott, Absolutely applaud your efforts to give students detailed feedback on drafts at all stages. I remember the courses in which I learned the most were always those where I could have an equivalent of a detailed 1:1 with the instructor.

As I was reading your post, I couldn't help but wonder if an online document feedback tool wouldn't be really useful. (Full disclosure, I work on a free one called Backboard http://www.getbackboard.com). These tools show the document in your browser and make it as fast to give feedback online as it is to use a red pen on a paper copy. You can generally upload multiple versions of the documents, which would solve some of the problems managing drafts and remembering what feedback you had given at each stage. Most don't support voice annotation, but we'll be supporting it soon.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for blogging about SlideRo...

Hi Scott,

Thanks for blogging about SlideRocket in education. We have a lot of interest from students, teachers and professors using SlideRocket and we're always interested to hear their feedback. One of the best ways that we think SlideRocket enables education is through the collaborative authoring and sharing features available in the business plan. This way students can work together to assemble presentations in the classroom and beyond. So Podcasting for Dummies is right. Then I imported the audio file into Movie Maker. I don't have access to a Mac other than the Peik computer lab, so I had to learn how to use movie maker - which isn't too bad if you have time to mess around with it.

Once my audio file was in movie maker (and I added the 'Vitamin D' slide - which I do not think is necessary), then Blogger recognized it as a video and let me add it. I think if I had used Media Mill first, I maybe could have avoided the movie maker step.

I haven't completed my interview yet, so am hoping to record that tonight, and basically use the same process - only use Media Mill this time to get the RSS feed.

When it comes to having my students use technology for class assignments I find that it can be a very chaotic experience if the directions and expectations are not very, very clear. I'm lucky to have a course coordinator who helps me field the administrative issues that come up. I always include an example of what is expected and require work done early to give time to address problems the technology may create.

I'm happy to act a resource for these kinds of technology use questions - even after this course is complete!

Thanks for your comments to my blog! It didn't always go so smooth which makes me wonder about having students do the same thing. The great thing about technology is that it opens a whole new way of introducing material and engaging with that material. The problem, however, is that sometimes teachers end up spending too much time teaching technology and not enough time actual teaching the content. That is why I might just use the voicethread as a presentation and "comment" tool and not exect my students to create their own voicethreads. I liked what you did here.
